#1437: Extended Play (feat. Lion Melta)

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
Big up man like Lion Melta! - I've been waiting for some time to get another acoustic session on the show because the reverb in that studio is incredible. Caught Lion Melta's performance one Sunday at The Den out in East Flatbush (Large up King Lion Sound each and every time), and I had to have him come do his thing on Shanty Town. More than your typical reggae singer, he constructs tunes with structure and layers, like a distant cousin of Jimmy Cliff or Bob Marley. His promo EP, I Feel Your Pain, is filled with spirited and masterful songs of freedom. Check out Lion Melta at:
or hit him up on Facebook at http://facebook.com/lion.melta

#1438: Raise Your Sixpoint (feat. Mush One and Screechy Dan [Top Shotta Band])

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
If you didn't know already, Top Shotta Band is the best live reggae band in NYC right now. Spearheaded by Mush One (Slackers, Scorchers, Fireproof), and fronted by Screechy Dan on vocals ("Skin Out", "Pose Off"), its a splendid listening experience each and every time. The two of them passed through the BBOX studio to talk about the glory days of the '90s, how they came to collaborate together, and the making of their album Top Shotta Band featuring Screechy Dan, now available on Amazon, ITunes, and good old fashioned vinyl.

#1439: Hot We Hot (Style Scott Tribute feat. JonnyGoFigure)

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

It is with a heavy heart that we do yet another homage to one of reggae's greatest contributors, this time for Mr. Lincoln "Style" Scott, drummer for Roots Radics and Dub Syndicate, playing for acts like Bunny Wailer, Israel Vibration, and Gregory Isaacs. Sadly, he was found dead in his home in Manchester Parish this month, and left a gap that will be impossible to fill. JonnyGoFigure, top selector and regular guest on Shanty Town, joins me to burn through stacks of vinyl and give Style Scott the send-off he deserves.

#1440: Yo, Leggo! (feat. Ticklah)

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
Ticklah aka Victor Axelrod, the man of a thousand monikers graced BBOX Radio with his presence on Devil's Night to make some mischief. He is an accomplished musician and producer, and has probably played on a lot of your favorite albums. That being said, hes still as humble as can be.
We talked about his work with Easy Star, namely the highly innovative Dub Side of the Moon album (the Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon remake in a reggae stylee), which was released ten years ago this fall. We also talked about his third solo release in 2007 on Easy Star, Ticklah Vs. Axlerod, and his tendencies as a perfectionist.
But most importantly, we talked about his new record, Ya Llegó,  now available on 10 inch vinyl from Names You Can Trust (Large up E's E and Monk One!). This record has been quite anticipated, and it is everything you've come to expect from a man like Ticklah - well crafted instrumentation and a seamless blend of influences from different genres - this one still has the dub, roots and ska all in the mix, but with a real Latin flavor, as it is all covers of Salsa tunes from cats like Hector Lavoe and Eddie Palmieri. With Mayra Vega on vocals, the vibe is just right. But don't take it from me, listen for yourself: http://nyctrust.bandcamp.com/album/ya-llego

#1444: YBF Til Infinity (feat. Thunderlions)

It was a pleasure to have Brooklyn's own Thunderlions back in the building once again! These bredren are constantly in the studio putting out a steady steam of big tunes, whether its their remake of a John Holt classic or their freestyle over Bobby Shmurda's ubiquitous summer hit (had to put it down for Flatbush and Bed-Stuy!).
Right now, all three members of the collective are dropping some solo mixtapes, Knotti Chris just recently released Wintergames (http://www.audiomack.com/playlist/knottichris/wintergames), Isaac Faith is about to drop one called Z100, and last but not least Itah Torch is finishing up his solo effort, Fearless. Like I said, these cats have been grinding.
We talked about some of these new tunes, listened to a few of them and of course got into the obligatory freestyle session, this time over a BDP classic, the beat for Mad Lion's "Take it Easy". (Special request to Knotti for coming off the top like a true emcee!) #RRR!!!

In this episode, we welcome back Maddie Ruthless, the Rocksteady Queen of New Orleans, alongside Matt Burdi on drums. Together they make up 1/2 of The Far East, one of the best Brooklyn-based reggae outfits around. Check them out on soundcloud (http://soundcloud.com/teafactorysounds/youthman) and link them pon di facebook (http://www.facebook.com/thefareast) especially if you want info on the Reggae Prom this New Years Eve, where they will be performing alongside The Frightnrs, featuring selections from Grace of Spades and JonnyGoFigure.

Whether you call him Dubstar or just good ol'  "John", you know you're in for a good conversation when talking to him. Whether its about surfing, cameras, or (of course) sweet reggae music,  its always good reasoning with this bredren. On this particularly chilly Thursday in January, he and I did just that. And then he graced Shanty Town with an expertly curated all-vinyl guest set. You might have heard him play some of these big tunes at various dances in NYC from way back, or maybe he's tagged you on Instagram in one of the flicks he's snapped recently. The man seems to be everywhere all at once, and we're glad he's out there in the world

Caught up with this new reggae artist named Shon Dan, from Brooklyn by way of Trinidad. Shon moved here with his family only a few years ago, and began DJ'ing with some highschool friends and at the ripe age of 20. He has already put his first mixtape out alongside his Rebel Irration massive, entitled Fire Era. Check it out here on Dat Piff: (http://www.datpiff.com/Shon-Dan-Fire-Era-mixtape.669905.html) Drawing inspiration from the Most High, and the roots and culture music introduced to him by his father, Shon Dan Rebel is wise beyond his years, and it shows in the lyrical content, full of love and livity. We get a great interview and an exclusive musical session from him here on Shanty Town. Fulljoy this episode - this kid is the future.

#1505: The King and Prince (Bob Marley and Dennis Brown Tribute) (feat. Azad OneWise)

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
It seems like more than a mere coincidence that these two legends were born in the same week (Bob Marley born Feb 6, 1945 and Dennis Brown Feb 1, 1957). Achieving stardom at home and abroad, these two were more than just singers and songwriters, they were ambassadors of Jamaica and reggae culture, spreading peace and livity in their music right 'til the end. It is an honor to pay tribute to these two every year in February here on Shanty Town, digging for their records and sharing them with anyone who will listen. This year I was fortunate enough to have Azad with me, his second time on the show, always repping OneWise Sound to the fullest. I know everyone will fulljoy these tunes from the masters - here we come with love and not hatred!

#1506: Lovers For Lovers (feat. Sweet V and Jonny Go Figure)

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

Every year I have my good friends come on the show and spread some love, and this Valentines Day was no exception. Bringing classic lovers tunes from all eras of reggae in an all-vinyl style, Sweet V, Jonny, and a bottle of Henny made some magic in the studio that night! That same week, Jonny Go and Sweet V (along with Syro of Three Kings Sound) also celebrated their one-year anniversary at Backayard Sessions, their smash hit monthly dance over at 739 Franklin in Crown Heights, so you know we had extra love to share that night!

#1507: Zion Way (feat. Zion Rose)

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
It was another cold night, but Zion Rose brought some heat on the Shanty Town show! I've been trying to get her to do a guest set for a while now, and since we were both running tune at the Dennis Brown Tribute this month, it seemed like a perfect opportunity. Coming from Connecticut, she learned the ways of the selector from "Brains" of Black Roots Sound around 2003. A couple years after, she started playing her own sets, eventually traveling all over the country to share her tunes. She even became Champion Selectress of the Queen Battle Royal 2011 right here in Brooklyn, beating other sounds "with roots and culture, not slackness".

Respect and manners to man like Anthony Prophet, who passed through the show to talk about his life in music. He and I talked about the reggae scene then and now, and listened to tracks from his second album, released in 2011, which marked his return to music. We even debuted a brand new song not on the album, special request to all the herbalists. 'Ighest Ites!

#1509: Give Ises (feat. Sweet V, Dawta Maolee, and African Violet Roots)

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

This episode, originally aired the first week of March, was in honor of International Women's Day (March 8). Obviously, I needed to have a couple of New York's best selectresses in control of the tunes that night. I had to bring out Sweet V, a Shanty Town regular, alongside African Violet Roots doing her first (but definitely not last) set here on the program. I also thought it would be great to have Dawta Maolee aka Carla St. Romain back on the show, to catch up with her and hear more about her works in the community, with her charity Call to Feed the Poor (https://www.facebook.com/feedthepoorworldwide) We talked about a lot of things, but what I found most interesting as well as most important, was the fact that we often look to women in our lives for inspiration. Whether it be those in your family, your neighbors or those we have come to know in our life, everyday women can live extraordinary lives.
